Ava has wanted a Power Wheels Jeep for months, maybe even a year now. We moved in, well a year ago, and the little neighbor girls have one. So we finally couldn't take the bickering and arguing over who got to drive any longer and broke down and got her a Jeep. We weren't about to buy one new, hello, they're $300! We scoured Craigslist and found one for $40 with a dead battery. In true "modify it" fashion, the squirrels in my husband's head jumped in super sonic mode. Before we even had the Jeep, he had a huge list of things to do to it to make it "better," because Power Wheels needed some assistance apparently. First on the list was a new battery, but not any batter, a car battery. The modifier in me was excited, the mother side of me was throwing on the brakes. He continued to explain all the safety precautions he is taking to keep our first born (and all the neighbor kids) safe. Rest assured, it will be safe. However, remember, it is still a machine in the hands of a 3 year old, we shall see what kind of damage is done.
So far, Ava has decided Barbie is not for her and the jeep needed to be green. All the stickers were peeled off and her chosen color of Green Apple has been applied. Being as this thing now weighs at least double its original weight we've added a roll cage made of abs plastic (yes sewer pipe). It's actually pretty sturdy.
Addam is still working on a way to make kill switches in the new bumpers so when she runs me over (or hits other things) it will kill the power and I won't become road kill in the hands of a 3 year old.
Before you panic, helmets will be worn at all times, seat belts will also always be on, it is not to be used without adult supervision, and no one or no thing is ever to be run into with the Super Wheels. Breaking of any of the rules will automatically result in a timeout and the Jeep will be disabled until trust can be regained.
I'll keep updating as we go along.
Here's a picture of the beginning of modification...more to come.
